Over the next decade $50 billion is expected to be spent building new pipelines over land, according to one estimate. In an attempt to reduce these costs, the oil and gas industry is considering a new approach airships. These would be used not as giant airborne tankers for carrying oil or gas from wells, but as delivery trucks, carrying materials, equipment and supplies to remote places for laying pipelines. At the moment, logistics accounts for a quarter of the cost of building a pipeline, says Luc Henriod, executive secretary of the International Pipeline and Offshore Contractors Association (IPLOCA), based in Geneva in Switzerland. In Kazakhstan laying one pipeline required 800km (500 miles) of new roads to be built and a further 800km to be repaired so that supply trucks could reach the pipeline.
